Rev. Ellen Leaving Dec. 31
More
than a decade ago, when I applied to
Unity’s ministerial school, I told the
Admissions Committee that I expected I
would lead a church for some years then
turn to writing as my primary form of
ministry. Writing has always been my
love and my strength. Now Spirit is
telling me to get on with it!
So I am
planning to leave as senior minister at
the end of December.
I don’t
have another job waiting. I’m doing what
I always tell you to do – stepping out
in faith! I’m eager to see what Spirit
has in store for me, as well as for our
church.
Here’s
what I think you can expect: The church
board, made up of eight elected members
of the congregation, will soon put
together a volunteer search team and
begin the process of finding a new
senior minister. Typically, ministers
who are interested in the job send
resumes, and the finalists are brought
in for a weekend to meet people, speak
on Sunday and answer questions from the
congregation. The board makes the final
hiring decision with as much input from
congregants as possible. It typically
takes six to nine months.
Meanwhile,
Revs. Ed Townley and Kurt Condra, our
associate ministers, will hold down the
fort. Neither of them plans to apply for
the job of senior minister, but they are
happy to help in the meantime. The board
has asked Rev. Ed to be acting senior
minister, so he will be speaking on
Sundays after the first of the year
until the new minister arrives.
We have a
wonderful staff that keeps the church
running smoothly. We have a strong board
that combines a cross-section of people
who have years of church experience with
newer members who bring fresh ideas. We
have plans in place for 2008 – I
particularly recommend Rev. Ed’s 4T
prosperity class, which starts Jan. 23 –
and our lineup of interesting classes,
speakers and groups will continue as
usual.
I have
loved being at UCD these past 8 ½ years,
and I believe the church is in good
shape. Our growth has not been in
numbers but in strength, in people’s
commitment and engagement with the
church. Our sense of community continues
to deepen, and new leaders are stepping
up daily to take on projects within the
church, small and large.
The best
way for you to support the church right
now is to attend, serve and give. We
want the next minister to realize what a
gem we have created at UCD! This is a
time of pure possibility for the church,
a chance to vision together for the
future and attract exactly the right new
leader. I hope you will participate in
that process to the fullest.
I am so
grateful for the love and support I have
received from friends and even strangers
in the church through these years
together. I see nothing but good things
ahead for Unity Church of Dallas, and I
am honored to have been a part of it. |
