Rev.
Elizabeth Thompson
Reverend Elizabeth Thompson was born in Decatur Alabama and grew up in
Raleigh North Carolina. As a young girl she enjoyed team sports
particularly swimming and softball. She dreamed of being like Julie
Andrews in the Sound of Music which fostered an interest in musical
theater. As a teenager she was selected to the North Carolina
Governors School in music and subsequently graduated from the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro with a major in music education.
After graduation she taught music, and was a private vocal coach. Her
spiritual life opened with an invitation to head up the music ministry
at Unity of Raleigh under Jim Rosemergy, her first Unity Minister. From
this point, her life changed and her passion for Unity ministry was
ignited. In preparation for ministerial school she served as a Silent
Unity prayer partner, music minister, soloist, License Unity Teacher,
and spiritual counselor. One of her greatest influences was her
spiritual teacher, The Reverend Katherine Jarvis who was a student of
Charles and Cora Fillmore, Unity minister, and Head of Unity Ministerial
Training School.
Reverend Elizabeth’s credo is to “Live life as a spiritual adventure”.
This is her ongoing devotion, discipline and delight in every ministry
she serves. Each church she has served has emphasized the importance
of being a vital presence in the community, be it sponsoring or
participating in activities such as December 31st peace
vigils, arts festivals, Earth Day Celebrations, Community Help
Centers, or Habitat for Humanity.
After her ordination, Reverend Elizabeth and her daughter Kathryn moved
to Charlotte, NC where they pioneered Christ Unity Church. Within two
years the church community purchased land and built their first church.
In 1998 she was called to serve as the senior minister of Unity
Renaissance in Chesapeake, Virginia following the unexpected retirement
of its founding minister. The expressed spiritual goals of Unity
Renaissance revolved around deepening family support in its diverse
expressions, small groups, creative spiritual arts in drama and music,
outreach, and developing credit classes. In 2002 and 2003 Unity
Renaissance Church twice hosted “Unity in the field” SEE sessions
where Unity students attended from over seven states and Canada.
In 2004 Reverend Elizabeth and her husband Neil took the opportunity to
move aboard their sailboat (ACT III) and explore the Chesapeake Bay,
South East Coast and the Bahamas. Living on the sometimes “very high”
seas was an adventure of a lifetime. While living in the Tidewater
area she enjoyed being the helmswoman in racing their sailboat.
Upon returning from the Bahamas she served as Interim Minister at Unity
Center of Peace in Chapel Hill, NC helping this spiritual community
emerge from a very challenging era back into health and prosperity.
In addition to spending time with her family she enjoys, singing,
cruising, hiking, horseback riding and travel. Her current hobbies are
studying global markets and global economic development.
