Rev. Ellen Debenport was appointed senior minister at
Unity Church of Dallas in December 2003 after serving four years as
an associate minister here. She brings to Sunday mornings a blend of
intelligence, humor, and a fresh look at the Bible and the spiritual
principles by which we live. Her messages often focus on human beings’
role as co-creators with God and the divine power that dwells in each
person.
As an associate minister, Ellen created a lively Wednesday
night service with the Unitunes house band and helped organize the Unity
Texas marketing team with other churches in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
She also taught classes on prosperity and Unity basics as well as imaginative
short courses on the metaphysics of fairy tales and shady ladies of
the Bible.
Before she was called to ministry, Ellen was a journalist
with United Press International and the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times,
mostly covering politics. Her last posting was in Washington, DC, focusing
on social issues including welfare, gays, women, voting rights, and
immigration. She then studied for two years at the Unity School for
Religious Studies near Kansas City, Mo., and was ordained in 1999. She
is a native Texan with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from
Baylor University.
