Unity
Church of Dallas began in 1943 in a storefront in downtown Dallas. The
minister, Rev. Ruth Gillespie, and the congregation remained there
until 1951, when in one Sunday 100 individuals raised
the needed $10,000 to move to a new location at Greenville and McCommas
in East Dallas.
After
lovingly restoring the building, the congregation proudly had
its first service at the Unity Church of Practical Christianity,
as it was then called. Nineteen years later, a Religious
Science group merged with the church, and Dr. Donald Curtis became
the minister of the newly named Unity Church of Dallas.
As the congregation grew, land was purchased at 6525 Forest Lane,
and the first phase of the present church was built. The
first service on Oct. 14, 1973, was in the room now used as Fellowship
Hall.
The
church later bought the adjoining 5.5 acres, including the White
House, and built a new 950-seat sanctuary, prayer chapel, bookstore
and adult classrooms. The existing sanctuary was opened
Aug. 24, 1986.
