What is a “Yes Day?”

The premise: kids get to do whatever they want for a single day (nothing dangerous or illegal) and parents must go along with their requests.

This idea is based on the book “Yes Day!” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal (Author) and Tom Lichtenheld (Illustrator). There is also a Netflix movie with Jennifer Garner.

Why do kids get to have all the fun? Let’s be kid-like for a day and bring back fun and joy into our lives.

What makes it “Spiritual”?

A regular “Yes Day” is sort of a cross between a staycation and a vacation in that you set a few guidelines as to budget and distance you will travel accommodating for any special needs of the participants. “Yes Days” can be once a year or every few months depending on the family and circumstances.

A “Spiritual Yes Day” lets you focus on what you need to spiritually refresh yourself.

You will need to make a few decisions ahead of time.

  1. What is the goal of your “Spiritual Yes Day”? Is it for a reset, a chance just to be or a search for inspiration and answers?
  2. Who with? You can do this solo, with a partner or friend, your family or a small group of friends. The more people involved, the more planning and agreements you will need to do ahead of time.
  3. What day? You want to plan this to happen within one calendar month or sooner. This gives you anticipatory joy.
  4. Where? How far do you want to travel on your day? This could be determined if part of your day includes a trip to a special location.
  5. What do you want/need to do to refresh your spirit? This answer is different for everyone. Brainstorm at least 3-5 things you want to do. It’s ok if the list goes beyond that because you can use that for ideas for future days.
  6. What is your budget for the day? Think about meals, tickets, transportation, etc.

Here are a few ideas for your “Spiritual Yes Day”

  1. Sleep in, take a nap or get up early.
  2. Pray
  3. Meditate
  4. Read that inspirational book you’ve been meaning to.
  5. Visit: a bookstore, museum, garden, library, park.
  6. Exercise: walk, take a class or participate in a sport you love.
  7. Meals: eat in bed, try a new dish, plan a picnic, visit your favorite restaurant or try something new. If you decide to fast, do so safely paying attention to hydration and blood sugar needs.
  8. Enjoy being outdoors (with sunscreen). Watch the sunrise or the sunset (or both).
  9. Create: if your soul wants you to make something, do it. It can be a project you’re already working on, but haven’t had the time for. Or a class/workshop you want to do. (If there’s not something running live on the day you choose, there a ton of online classes you can participate in).

A “Spiritual Yes Day” doesn’t have to be complicated.

And of course, give yourself permission to change it up on the day. Listen to your soul and intuition as a guide when it says "Yes, let's do that!"

Go have some spiritual fun!
